Buying Land

This is the first and most important step of the home building process. Not doing proper research on the lot you are looking to buy can lead to dire consequences while building. See below for the steps & information you will want to obtain to help make the building process go more smoothly.


  • Frontage on County Road
  • Survey of Land
  • Title Search
  • Title Insurance
  • Water table (needed for well)
  • Soil test for the septic system
  • Easy to improve the land?
  • Submit Loan Application

After Closing

Congrats! You have acquired all the necessary documents and closed on a loan. Huzzah! Next step is finding a general contractor. This can be tricky. Every contractor will promise you the world but following through with hat promise is a different story. And not choosing the right company can you lead to costly consequences. Below are some steps and questions to ask when choose a GC.


  • Building license required?
  • Compliance bond required?
  • Water tap and meter (or contact Well Digger)
  • Temporary Services Electricity, Water, etc
  • Prepare site plan
  • Check references.
  • Are they Bonded?
  • Are they Licensed?
  • Liability Insurance
  • Insurance for Workmen’s Compensation
