Ideal Materials for Decks and Porches in a Coastal Environment
You can’t get much better than an escape to a coastal paradise, but your home may need protection from the wet, salty environment. Here are some ideal materials to keep your deck and porch low maintenance so you can enjoy your day relaxing in the sun.
The first step to creating an ideal deck or porch is considering the option of composite decking. Composite decking, like Azek or Trex, is an ideal alternative to real wood. It is long lasting and gives the appearance of real wood. With the growing popularity of this material, the industry now offers a variety of finishes, textures, grains and styles to suit your look and budget and the quality keeps improving. While this decking is known to be pricier than wood, it can last much longer than real wood which will eventually have to be replaced due to wear and rot. Not only does composite decking stand up to harsh weather better than wood, depending on the type and color, it has the ability to dissipate heat well. With a higher resistance to mold, mildew, and moisture damage and no annual sealing or staining necessary, the product continually resists most stains, scratches, and fading.
There are different types of composite or synthetic decking. Capped composite is decking that has a composite core but has a “capstock” or a thin plastic veneer overtop. Capped composite is generally more expensive than other types of composite due to its realistic look and durability. It also comes with better warranties. The alternative is all plastic decking, or PVC, which doesn’t contain any wood, making it immune to any mold or wood decay. However, it does not hold up to scratches or fading as well and it tends to become more weathered. If your budget will allow, composite decking is definitely a better, longer lasting alternative to all-wood decking.
